Benchmark Setup

Testing was done on my personal machine, with a Duron 800, Abit KT7-Raid, generic full tower, 40GB IBM 40GV 5400rpm HDD on the primary master IDE channel, the Aopen CDRW on secondary master IDE channel, and also running Windows 2000 Pro.

The software used in benchmarking was CDSpeed 99, CDDAE 99 as well as Nero 5.5. I tested pressed CD , CDR and CDRW data and audio CDs for CDSpeed 99, as well as pressed CD, CDR and CDRW audio CDs in CDDAE 99, as well as write speeds at 12x and rewrite speeds at 10x using Nero 5.5.

As for media used, I used Ramedia 80 minute CDR disks, rated for up to 16x write speeds. The CDRW media used was the 10x RW media that came with the package, from Aopen. As for pressed CDs, I used an audio CD, a local production entitled 'The Gift of Life', and my Diablo2 Expansion CD.

I used a short 7 track, a local production entitled 'The Gift of Life'. I repeated this test using a copy of the CD, both on CDR and CDRW. DAE quality was top notch, but read speeds averaged around 16.67x to 16.88x only, roughly half of its rated maximum speed of 32x. Seek times were consistent throughout, except for the pressed audio CD at full, which was 141ms.

For the data CD tests, I used my Diablo2 Expansion CD, and tested also using CDR and CDRW copies of that CD. Average and ending speeds varied by quite a bit on all three types of media.Seek times were quite erratic too, as were CPU usage numbers.
